Gamescience® D-Total™

THE IMPROVED D-TOTAL PERFORMS LIKE 100 DIFFERENT DICE!

HOW ABOUT 240 OR 480 DIFFERENT DICE?

Think of each die face as the face on a clock. At 12 O’clock, you should see a Pentagon, which is the shape of a 12 sided die.  The number inside the pentagon is what you got when you rolled a 12 sided die.

THE D-TOTAL STORY

In 2005, Dr. A. F. Simkin mailed a beautifully hand crafted prototype of a new 24 sided shape to Colonel Louis Zocchi. Dr. Simkin explained that if this shape were produced, he could generate an imprinting pattern which would allow the die to simulate the rolling of 5 other shapes. At the same time, Kevin Cook, who holds the Guinness World Record for having the world’s largest dice collection, was telling Zocchi about a new 24 sided dice shape he had received from France.

Zocchi asked Franck Dutrain, the Frenchman owning the 24 sided dice mold, to send him a sample. When it arrived, it was the same shape Dr. Simkin had used for his D-Total project. Because Dutrain had made his die 1 3/4 inches tall, its faces were just the right size for Dr. Simkins project. Dr. Simkin did not yet know of Dutrain or his dice molding tool.

After Zocchi suggested to Dr. Simkin that the numbers on the new die should be laid out like the numbers found on the face of a clock, Dr. Simkin reworked his layout and expanded it to cover 8 faces. Col. Zocchi discovered that Simkin’s innovative layout could generate the results of dice shapes which had 2, 3, 4, 5 sides on up to 24, 30 or even 80 sides.

Kevin Cook can be found on-line at Dicecollector.com although Mr. Cook does not sell dice, he is always looking for unusual dice to add to his collection, and he usually knows who is making which unique shapes, colors, imprints, etc. and is willing to direct people to places that have such dice for sale.

THE D-TOTAL ADVANTAGE

When a game master rolls a 4 sided die and tells the players what will happen next, the players already know how to argue against the roll of a 4 sided die. Consequently, heated discussions quickly follow.

When the game master uses the D-Total, he has 13 elements of information available on the face of every die. Even if his players know how to read the D-Total, they don’t know which of its 13 different faces, the game master is using, so they have little or no argument to change the game masters pronouncement.

MAKING A 240 SIDED DIE

While showing the new improved D-Total at Origins, June 17 through the 20 of 2016, a mathematician told Colonel Zocchi, that by adding a zero to all numbers in the center of the die, players could create a 240 faced die! Although I can’t see the merits of having 240 outcomes, it is an available option.

NOTICE TO GAME DESGINERS

Because the rolling of numbers higher than 24 requires two to four re-rolls, we want a better solution. If you can determine how to generate the higher number outcomes without re-rolling the die, please contact us for a reward for your solution. In addition, if you can design an easy o learn fast playing game which uses all or most of the numbers on this die, please contact Col. Zocchi at:
